Study the word 'fast' in the following sentences:

1. He didn't take anything during the 'fast' ( Names something )
2. Muslims 'fast' during Ramzan ( Expresses an action;tells what Mulsims do.)
3. I missed the 'fast' train ( Adds to the meaning of the noun " train" . What kind of a train? A fast train)
4. She speaks 'fast' ( Adds to the meaning of  the verb " speaks", tells how she speaks.  The word 'fast' is a noun in 1, a verb in 2, an adjective in 3 and an adverb in 4.

A word can do different jobs in different sentences. some words belong to more than one part of speech. 

The earth is 'round'. (Adjective)
The boys ran 'round' the tree. ( Preposition )
Will you come 'round' to our house this evening? ( Adverb )
We won the first 'round' of the game. ( Noun )
The child's eyes 'rounded' with excitement. ( Verb )

PARTS OF SPEECH

Words are classified according to the particular work they do in a sentence. They are:
1. Noun    2. Pronoun    3. Adjective    4. Verb
5. Adverb    6. Preposition    7. Conjunction    8. Interjection

1. Noun : It is a naming word. It is the name of a person, animal, place, thing or idea.
Ex: Children, Hyderabad, Student, Jealousy.

2. Pronoun: Its a word used instead of a Noun.
Ex: He, her, itself, they, I etc.

3. Adjective: It is a word that adds to the meaning of a noun or pronoun.
Ex: good, large, few, powerful, energetic.

4.  Verb: It is a word "doing"  word.  It expresses an action. It tells what someone or something does or is.

5. Adverb: It is a word that adds to the meaning of a verb, an adjective or another adverb.
Ex: late, soon, beautifully, bravely, certainly.

6. Preposition: It is a word placed before a noun or pronoun to show its relation to another word.
Ex: on, in, at, since, for, from

7. Conjunction: It is a "joining word" . It joins words or groups of words, phrases, clauses or sentences.
Ex: but, and, or, so.

8. Interjection: It is an exclamatory word, denoting some sudden feeling.
Ex: Wow!, hurry!, oh!, ooh!, aah!, ouch!
